Disruption of biological clocks can cause the brain injury seen in neurodegeneration, new research indicates.
A study from Oregon State University revealed that the disruption of circadian rhythms can cause accelerated neurodegeneration, loss of motor function and even early death.
Prior to the research, scientists were unaware of whether this biological clock disruption was the cause of the brain injury, or a result of it.
Researcher Kuntol Rakshit explained that the experiments, which were published in the journal Neurobiology of Disease, showed that both environmental and genetic approaches accelerated these health problems.
"There's a great deal of interest right now in studies on circadian rhythms, as we learn more about the range of problems that can result when they are disrupted," said Mr Rakshit.
"Ultimately we hope that this research will be taken from the laboratory to the bedside."
This follows research from Lund University in Sweden that revealed the brain injury seen in Alzheimer's disease could begin as early as ten years before diagnosis.
