Eating fatty foods could cause brain injury, worrying new findings revealed in two studies have suggested.
One of the papers, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that in obese rats, neurons around the hypothalamus could be injured by inflammation - a process that also occurs in humans.
As the hypothalamus functions as the on/off switch which tells the body when enough food has been consumed, this drives the overeating.
The second study, found in the same journal, revealed that in mice given an extremely fatty diet, replacement of these neurons around the hypothalamus was slow compared to those consuming a lower-fat diet.
According to the authors: "Feeding mice HFD suppressed neurogenesis, as demonstrated by the observation that these mice both generated fewer new neurons and retained more old neurons."
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that dietary choices can affect brain health. For example, recent research indicated that eating plenty of fish could stave off Alzheimer's disease.
