Traumatic brain injury 'a major problem for kids'

A US medical expert is hoping to establish a breakthrough so that more children can be better treated for traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Dr. Jose Pineda, a paediatrician and the director of neurocritical care at Washington University's St. Louis Children's Hospital, is hoping to find a breakthrough into the condition.

This is after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted research which highlighted that 50,000 Americans die from the effects of TBI each year, while a further 85,000 individuals are affected by long-term disabilities.

Dr Pineda believes that TBI is a particular concern for children, with the expert pointing out that more kids die per day from the condition than those who lose their live as a result of cancer or any other disease.

He told Ksat.com: "As a matter of fact TBI kills more children than all other top ten diseases put together. So it's a real problem. Not only is it very common, but also the brain is very complex."

Dr Pineda's views come soon after a Washington University study suggested that high levels of tau protein in the brain could lead to a slower recovery of those who have suffered a brain injury.
