Cortical 3D imaging advance 'could boost brain injury understanding'

Researchers have created the first realistic 3D reconstruction of a brain circuit, bringing science closer to the successful mapping of the human brain and an improved understanding of how brain injuries affect victims.

Scientists at the Max Planck Florida Institute have developed new research tools and created a diagram of the thalamocortical column of the rodent brain, which is the basis of the cortex and part of the brain that is responsible for many higher functions.

The study, which was published in Cerebral Cortex, is being heralded as an important step on the way to understanding how the brain computers and goes awry in neurological disorders.

Dr Marcel Oberlaender, first author, said that this is the first time that a cortical column has been modelled realistically in 3D.

Recent research published in Pediatrics has revealed that many children that suffer from mild traumatic brain injuries suffer from headaches afterwards, with adolescents among those most commonly affected in this way.
