The impact of injuries in the UK is much higher than was previously estimated, research has shown.
A study has revealed that the effect of brain injury, fractures, dislocations, eye, chest and abdominal injuries, among others, is two and a half times higher than previously estimated.
University of Nottingham scientists studied participants who had sustained an accidental injury in the home, using questionnaires from the patients and data on hospital readmissions, emergency department attendances and injury-related deaths.
Researchers estimated the disability adjusted life years (DALYs), which combine the years of life lost due to premature death and the years of productive life lost due to disability after an injury.
It was found that the number of DALYs related to injury in 2005 was 1,771,486 - 2.6 times higher than was previously believed.
Authors said that while the study was carried out in the UK, the findings have global relevance and healthcare policy and provision could be grossly inadequate.
