Woman receives Headway award for brain injury work

A woman who was left with severe brain injury after a car crash seven years ago has been given an award for helping others with the condition.

Michelle Coulson, from Aberdeen, won brain injury charity Headway's Campaigner of the Year for her work helping other people with the condition.

The award was presented by Beverly Turner - the wife of Olympic gold medallist James Cracknell, who suffered a brain injury in 2010 - as well as chief executive of Headway Peter McCabe.

Ms Coulson said: "I just like helping. I enjoy speaking about my brain injury as it makes me feel useful and that something good can come from the accident."

The 31-year-old was on her way to work as an English teacher at the secondary school where she worked when a van overtook her, swerving and forcing her to brake suddenly.

Her car slid across the road into an oncoming vehicle and was instantly crushed - leaving her in a coma for three and a half weeks.
