Footballer Steven Davies 'could have suffered brain injury'

Derby County footballer Steven Davies has spoken about his brush with brain injury, following an in-game collision.

Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, the 23-year old striker explained how close he came to sustaining major  traumatic brain injury after fracturing his skull in a match against Southampton in October 2011.

"The surgeon said how close it was to my brain. He said you have two layers of the skull and the first was completely shattered," Davies said.

"He said I was millimetres rather than inches from suffering brain damage."

Initially, the player thought he had "a bang on the head" and would be able to continue playing, but was rushed to hospital and had 10 metal plates and 20 screws put in place, in order to reconstruct the shattered portion.

Davies is recuperating well from his injuries and is expected to return to the game in January – however, he said his priorities have changed following the "shock" of his near-miss.

Prior to his injury, Davies has appeared ten times for Derby County in the 2011-12 season and scored five goals for the Npower Championship side.
