In a game of American football, running backs and quarter backs may be at the highest risk of brain injury, with research showing they take the hardest hits.
A study by Brown University also found that linemen and linebackers experience the most blows to the head during the game, according to research published in the Journal of Biomechanics.
Study leader Joseph J Crisco, said that the new data on the magnitude, frequency and location of head blows could help doctors to understand the biomechanics of how blows to the head result in brain injury.
"This allows us to quantify what the exposure is," Crisco said.
"It is the exposure that we need to build upon, so that we can then start understanding what the relationships are with acute and chronic head injury."
This comes after Mark Richt, head coach at Georgia, told OnlineAthens that kickoffs should be eliminated from American football games in order to reduce brain and spinal cord injury on the pitch.
