James Cracknell 'lucky to survive' cycling accident brain injury

Former Olympic gold medalist and rower James Cracknell believes he is very lucky to have escaped with his life after sustaining a brain injury during a cycling accident.

His skull was fractured in two places when the wing mirror of a petrol tanker hit him on the back of the head at 70mph, during a cycling trip across America, reports the Daily Express.

Cracknell told the newspaper: "I got clipped from behind. I didn't see it, I didn't hear it, I couldn't do anything about it.

"I'm incredibly lucky. If I hadn't been wearing a helmet I would not be here. If you can walk and talk after an accident like that you are doing OK."

Earlier this month, The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust called for ministers to introduce legislation making it mandatory for children to wear helmets while cycling.

The specialist charity suggested that children do not have the skills to judge road dangers and are risk takers "by nature".
