It should be law for children to wear helmets when cycling, according to a specialist charity - a move which would no doubt see a reduction in brain injury among kids.
Angela Lee, chief executive of The Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust, said that children do not have the skills or maturity to successfully judge road dangers and are risk takers "by nature".
The charity noted that some 50 per cent of hospital cycle casualties are children, and two times as many child cyclists than child pedestrians are admitted.
These comments follow a poll by the British Medical Journal which found that two-thirds of respondents do not believe adult cyclists should be made to don helmets.
Ms Lee responded: "The poll by the BMJ website should be taken with extreme caution as the results can be influenced by social networking, tweets and blogs to rally those who would oppose."
