Young girls could be more vulnerable to the traumatic brain injury seen in concussions, a surgeon has warned.
Dr Carrie Jaworski, head team physician for Northwestern University Athletics, said: "young girls may be at a higher risk than boys when it comes to concussions".
She explained that the brain is "like Jell-O", meaning that when it is impacted, however slight the blow, it will be affected.
Kurt Becker, high school football coach and former Chicago Bear, advised that athletes are removed from the game until completely recovered from the incident.
According to the expert, this includes a return to normal levels of eating, sleeping and concentration.
In other news, research published in journal Radiology found that post-concussive syndrome is associated with abnormal functional connectivity in the thalamus.
According to authors, this may result in a burning or aching sensation alongside mood swings and sleep disorders.
