It should be law for children to wear helmets when cycling in order to prevent traumatic brain injury, one MP maintains.
Liberal Democrat MP Annette Brooke has put forth a bill which would make it compulsory for children to wear cycling helmets when riding a bike.
If caught without a helmet, the offender would have to send proof of purchase of one within 28 days to avoid a fine.
Ms Brooke said that the law is designed to protect children from brain injury and its "devastating effects".
"Brain injury devastates the lives of individuals and their families. Children are at a higher risk because not only are their brains not fully developed but they are less experienced at cycling and on the roads in general," she said.
Meanwhile, research from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine has revealed that wearing a motorcycle helmet can help to prevent not just brain injury, but cervical spinal injury as well.
