A new study is to investigate brain injury in professional fighters in order to advance treatments for the condition.
The Cleveland Clinic's Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas is to look at 500 boxers and mixed martial arts fighters in order to determine what causes brain injury and what occurs during cumulative trauma.
Four annual MRI brain scans will be undertaken by each participant, alongside physical, cognitive and speech tests which will explore how cognition can be altered by suffering head trauma in the ring.
According to the Los Angeles times, Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, said: "A fighter's health is very important. Who wants to be involved in something that endangers a human life?
"If they can come up with a way to tell what the implications of boxing are, it's of interest for all of us to know."
This comes after the Bulkley Valley Brain Injury Association told bclocalnews.com that outdoor summer sports could heighten the risk of brain injury.
The organisation stated that finding the right helmet for each sport is vital to avoid such occurrences and players should make sure their chin strap remains secure.
