Brain injury patient 'very lucky' to acquire PhD

A teenager who suffered brain injury as a result of an operation to remove a tumour has been "very lucky" to go on and graduate with a PhD.

South Belfast resident Niamh Kennedy is now a lecturer in stroke recovery at the University of East Anglia, reports the Belfast Telegraph, and was inspired to study her course because some patients were not recovering from their acquired brain injury as quickly as she had done.

She told the newspaper: "I went on to investigate techniques that could be used in stroke rehabilitation which led to me receiving my PhD.

"In my view, we need more research into brain injury and strokes."

Earlier this month, the Child Brain Injury Trust urged ministers to consider changing the law to make it mandatory for children to wear a helmet, to avoid brain injury.
