Reading postman hit by branch, suffers brain injury paralysis

Jason Thatcher was struck by the 3ft branch after it fell off a tree overhanging his back garden.

The brain injury was actually sustained at its stem, affecting his mobility but leaving his communication and cognition intact.

According to Get Reading, the Royal Mail worker can only communicate using small head nods and eye movements.

Mr Thatcher had originally sought to sue his landlords, Sovereign Housing Association, who agreed to pay a compensation package of £2.5 million but denied any wrongdoing.

One of the tragedies of the case is the fact that Mr Thatcher remains completely aware of the seriousness of his condition and the extent of his traumatic brain injury.

Brain injury could be more likely during the summer months, according to the Bulkley Valley Brain Injury Association.

Speaking to bclocalnews.com, the organisation warned that outdoor sports put players at particular risk of brain injury, underlining the need to wear appropriate headgear to mitigate any risks.
