Prominent brain surgeons in Germany have completed a somewhat unusual project - measuring the incidence of brain injury in the iconic Asterix books.
Researchers analysed conflicts taking place in 34 volumes of the books and found that the 704 cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the comics mirrored reality.
According to researchers, although more than half of those with traumatic brain injury in the books had "initially severe impairment of consciousness after TBI", no damage was found.
"Roman nationality, hypoglossal paresis, lost helmet and ingestion of the magic potion were significantly correlated with severe initial impairment of consciousness," explained the authors.
Moreover, use of a helmet was seen to soften the impact of a hit to the head.
This follows news that wearing a motorcycle helmet can help to prevent cervical spinal injury in road accidents, as well as brain injury.
Research from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine revealed that the risk of cervical spinal injury in a motorcycle collision by up to 22 per cent.
