A compound found in red wine and grapes could be used to treat the long and short term effects of the brain injury seen in concussion, according to researchers.
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center researchers are using professional boxers to determine whether taking the compound resveratrol could reduce the effects of concussion.
Scientists have already conducted animal studies which showed that if the drug was given immediately after or soon after a brain injury, it "dramatically and significantly" reduced the long term damage.
This is the first human study into the compound.
Principal investigator Dr Joshua Gatson said: "Even though resveratrol is found in red wine, you would need 50 glasses of wine to get the required dose to get the protection you would need."
Meanwhile, researchers at Georgia Tech Research Institute have developed a simple radar system which could be used to screen individuals at risk of concussion.
By asking the patient to walk while reciting the months of the year in reverse order, scientists believe they can test whether a brain injury is present.
