Gabrielle Giffords, the US Congresswoman who suffered brain injury after being shot, yesterday (May 18th) had a surgery on her skull.
A gunman shot the Arizona politician in the head in a botched assassination attempt, meaning doctors had to remove a section of her skull to take the pressure off her brain.
Neurosurgeons have now used a plastic implant to patch up the hole, and according to a hospital statement is "recovering well", reports the Associated Press.
This will be welcome news for her astronaut husband Mark Kelly, who is currently orbiting the Earth on space shuttle Endeavour.
The procedure is designed to protect the brain and skull, and will allow Giffords to discard the helmet she has being wearing to protect her head.
Jared Loughner, 22, was arrested as a suspect in the shooting, which occurred at a Congress on Your Corner event at a Safeway store in Arizona.
