A new device has been approved to treat patients with brain tumours which reoccur following chemotherapy, it was announced by oncology company Novocure.
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the NovoTTF-100A System (NovoTTF) for treatment of the brain injury, known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) brain tumors.
Eilon Kirson, chief medical officer at Novocure, explained that the wearable device offers a "safe and effective" non-invasive alternative to chemotherapy.
"The device allows for continuous treatment without the usual, debilitating side effects that chemotherapies inflict on recurrent GBM patients and indirectly on their families," she said.
This follows research published in journal Cancer which revealed CT scans can cause secondary cancers.
Scientists at the University of California Los Angeles found that older testicular cancer patients who opt for multiple CT scans in place of lymph node removal had an increased risk of developing an additional cancer.
