Neuropsychology 'improves lives of acquired brain injury patients'RSS Feed

Neuropsychology could be used to lessen the after effects of acquired brain injury, a study has indicated.

Research conducted at the University of Granada proved that neuropsychological rehabilitation helps to reduce the cognitive, emotional and behaviour after-effects in those who have suffered acquired brain injury.

Seven patients with acquired brain injury were given neuropsychological treatment and compared with a control group of participants who did not receive the therapy. Eighteen patients and their families then underwent the treatment.

All participants showed improvements in their general cognitive performance, but those who had received the treatment earlier improved significantly more.

Researcher Alfonso Caracuel Romero said: "With this study, the relevance of treating cognitive, emotional and behavioural skills simultaneously in patients with acquired brain injury has been proved."

A media spotlight has recently been on the link between brain injury and depression, after a retired American footballer committed suicide. Researchers at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University Medical School are to test brain matter for signs of brain injury.
