Motorcycle helmets reduce the risk of spinal injury as well as brain injury, one expert has said.
Professor Ade Malomo, a consultant neurologist at University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, told the Nigerian Tribune that while motorcycle helmets are primarily designed to reduce brain injury, they go a long way to protecting riders from spinal cord injury too.
A study conducted at the hospital, presented during the first scientific conference of The Nigerian Academy of Neurological Surgeons, found that motorbike accidents made up 36.9 per cent of patients with brain injury, reports the newspaper.
The study also revealed that among the 1,028 patients who had been involved in a road traffic accident, 81 per cent suffered brain injury, 16.5 per cent sustained a spinal injury and 2.4 per cent had both.
Meanwhile, research published online in Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair found that by using functional electrical stimulation (FES), researchers were able to improve the grasping ability of those with incomplete spinal injury.
