Bone marrow treatment 'safe' for children with traumatic brain injury

Children with severe traumatic brain injury could be treated successfully with stem cells from their own bone marrow, early research has indicated.

As part of a study, published in Neurosurgery, treated ten children who had suffered severe traumatic brain injury, with stem cells from their own bone marrow within 48 hours of their injury occurring.

The bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) were taken from the hip bone and then infused back into the patient intravenously.

All of the children who underwent the procedure at the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital survived and the bone marrow collection was found to have no negative effects on blood circulation overall or in the brain.

According to the authors, "bone marrow harvest and intravenous mononuclear cell infusion as treatment for severe TBI in children is logistically feasible and safe".

Meanwhile, researchers from the University of Colorado found that acupressure improved cognition in the treatment of individuals with mild traumatic brain injury.
