Acupressure 'improves cognition in traumatic brain injury'

Acupressure could be used in the treatment of individuals with mild traumatic brain injury, a study has indicated.

Researchers from the University of Colorado found that the ancient treatment improved cognitive function in those with traumatic brain injury.

The treatment involves using fingertips to stimulate specific points on a person's body, similar to those used in acupuncture, an established treatment.

Jin Shin acupressure points are said to be located on "meridians" which run through the body and are believed to be connected to the health of specific organs, including the brain.

Lead study author Professor Theresa Hernandez said: "Think of the meridians as freeways and the pressure points as towns along the way.

"When there is a traffic jam in Denver that causes adverse effects as far away as Boulder, clearing the energy blocks, or in this case traffic jams, helps improve flow and overall health."

Meanwhile, Luke Griggs, spokesman for brain injury experts Headway, has said that people must be aware that traumatic brain injury can happen to anyone and take care to avoid such an event.
