American football players should employ safe tackling techniques to avoid brain injury while on the field, one expert has said.
Jason Mihalik of the University of North Carolina told the NCAA that players should also become more aware of where they are on the field in relation to their opponents, as this will help them brace for collisions.
He continued that while today's American football helmets are safe, they are likely to become more protective as technology progresses.
"People forget that dozens of football players died each year playing football before the modern-era helmet was instituted in football.
“We’ve come a long way in protecting our athletes with today’s helmets," he added.
This comes after the public's attention was focused on brain and spinal injury in sports due to the case of Rutgers University football player Eric LeGrand, who suffered a spinal cord injury on the field that left him paralysed from the neck down.
