A large percentage older people who undergo a critical operation for traumatic brain injury die in the hospital or shortly afterwards, new findings show.
Internal Medicine News reports that one-third of patients who have a cranial operation for traumatic brain injury die in the hospital, while one-half die within the year.
However, two-thirds of those who survive have a favourable outcome, found the analysis of 164 patients reported by Dr Mark Cipolle and colleagues at the annual meeting of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
According to the news source, Dr Cipolle said: "One thing that's very important to understand as clinicians is that these patients don’t get operated on and immediately do better.
"They often don't do better and often have a decline after surgery."
Meanwhile, scientists from the University of Glasgow found that the number of deaths among those who had suffered brain injury was higher in a 13-year follow up period than that those of with other injuries.
