Nine-year-old Kellsey Donaldson has been left wheelchair bound after having an extremely rare reaction to the virus that left her with the brain injury, the Daily Record reports.
Mother Julianne found her daughter having seizures in her cot and she was taken to the Sick Children's Hospital in Edinburgh, dying three times on the way.
The infection had spread to Kellsey's brain, causing permanent brain injury to the left side of the cortex, which controls speech and language.
Her parents are now on a mission to make people aware of the danger of cold sores and have launched a fundraising drive to raise the money needed to buy a hi-tech bike for their daughter.
