People diagnosed as psychopathic lack empathy, as seen in those with frontal brain injury, research has found.
Scientists from the University of Haifa found that those with psychopathic symptoms act as if they are suffering from a brain injury.
Previous research by Simone Shamay-Tsoory, who conducted the study, showed that individuals with frontal brain injury have difficulty showing empathy due to damage to the part of the brain that is responsible for emotional functioning.
She observed similar behaviour in those diagnosed with psychopathy during a computerised test designed to investigate empathy for another emotions.
"Seeing as psychopathic behaviour is similar to that of a person with brain damage, it could be that it could benefit from similar forms of treatment," she said.
This comes after an article in the Arizona Republic sad that four centres in the state are trialling the hormone progesterone as a treatment for acquired brain injury.
