'Operation Brain Trauma Therapy' set up in US

Researchers in Miami are have set up a project with the intention of discovering drugs that will successfully treat traumatic brain injury.

According to healthcanal.com, W. Dalton Dietrich, scientific director at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and Helen M. Bramlett, associate professor of neurological surgery will serve as principle investigator and co-investigator on new consortium Operation Brain Trauma Therapy.

The U.S Department of Defense grant consortium will develop drugs to lessen swelling, improve blood flow and generally reduce brain damage after mild, moderate or severe traumatic brain injury.

This is being set up due to the increased importance of finding solutions for brain injury due to the US military's efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In other news, US military health officials refused to pay for a new traumatic brain injury treatment for troops on the ground it is scientifically unproven.

The Tricare Management Agency found that cognitive rehabilitation therapy is not proven to help those with traumatic brain injury, despite being recommended by professionals in the field.
