A woman whose son suffered a traumatic brain injury has been honoured at the Australia Day Awards for her efforts to help young people with the condition.
Mary Nolan's son Chris experienced a multi-organ collapse while in Vietnam in 1996 which resulted in a severe acquired brain injury.
Ms Nolan then became a voice for young people with similar conditions who could not speak for themselves.
She has been made a Member of the Order of Australia for her efforts.
The Courier newspaper reports her as saying: "Nowhere in the system caters for younger people with ABI. We have an extraordinary situation where health, age care and rehab are all doing their own thing."
"We're just saying that this group is not being well-addressed."
Ms Nolan also hosts the Meredith Music Festival on her farm and was the first Australian to be elected to the Christian Life Community's World Executive Council.
This comes after news that a 16-year-old girl from Denver who suffered spinal injury when she was shot outside her high school has vowed to walk again.
