US congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's recovery is not completely out of the ordinary, according to one doctor.
The democrat, who suffered brain injury after being shot in the head by gunman Jared Loughner, is exhibiting early signs of progress.
According to reports, Giffords is now conscious, breathing on her own and her long term prognosis is looking positive.
However, Dr. Jeffrey Frank, director of Neuromedical and Neurosurgical Intensive Care at the University of Chicago Medical Center told Medill Reports Chicago that this recovery is not "miraculous".
"Prognostication is not some unknown where you just wait and see how people do. It really matters to get acute care with [doctors] who know what they're doing," he explained.
This comes after neurosurgeon Jim Brady warned that the politician may not return to congress following her brain injury.
He said that it is not impossible that she would return to work "but possible isn't the same as likely".
