Congresswoman sustains brain injury in shooting

Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has been left with severe brain injury after a shooting at a Safeway store in Arizona.

Jared Loughner, 22, has been arrested as a suspect in the shooting, which took place at a Congress on Your Corner event.

Nineteen people suffered gunshot wounds and six people died as a result.

Ms Giffords was flown to a Tuscan hospital for emergency surgery after been shot in the head at close range and is said to be responding well to treatment.

John Roll, chief judge of the US District Court for Arizona, sustained fatal injuries during the incident as did Giffords' aide Gabe Zimmerman.

Mr Loughner has been linked to white extremist group American Renaissance which has anti-government, anti-immigration and anti-semitic beliefs.

Criticism has been directed at the 'toxic' atmosphere in US politics today, which some believe could have been a catalyst for the shooting.
