Research into why women recover faster from brain injury than men has sparked speculation as to whether hormone progesterone could help those with traumatic brain injury, according to a report.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC), Professor Donald Stein found that progesterone helped lab rats recover from brain injuries and says that it is possible the female hormone could also help people recover from damaging incidents such as car crashes, falls and assaults.
Despite resistance in the scientific and medical communities, Emory University is now looking into the professor's findings, examining the healing potential of progesterone on human brain injury patients in 15 states.
According to the AJC, Dr. Arthur Kellermann, the former chairman of Emory's Department of Emergency Medicine said: "If this pans out and in fact does make a difference and helps people survive and recover, I think it will be considered one of the greatest medical discoveries of the century."
Meanwhile, researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that a compound derived from curry spice turmeric considerably improved the behaviour and molecular deficit in animals with conditions similar to traumatic brain injury and ischemic stroke.
