Music therapy could help patients recovering from brain injury, according to a review.
The Cochrane Foundation looked at several studies that looked into the effectiveness of music therapy on those with acquired brain injury.
Typically, treatment differs depending on the type of injury. Rhythmic auditory stimulation is thought to aid mobility, musical improvisation is used to help emotional expression, while singing, oral motor and breathing is thought to help with speech.
The overview of 184 patients in seven studies concluded that music can be effective in treating walking difficulties of those who have suffered strokes.
However, more research is needed on the effect of music therapy on other types of acquired brain injury as the evidence was inconclusive.
Meanwhile, researchers from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have found that a compound from curry spice turmeric could be significant in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.
