Curry spice compound could help those with brain injury

A compound derived from a curry spice could be significant in treatment of traumatic brain injury and ischemic stroke in the future, findings suggest.

Researchers David R Schubert and Pamela Maher from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies found that a compound from turmeric considerably improved the behavioural and molecular deficits in animals with similar conditions.

The compound CNB-001, taken from curcumin which is the active ingredient in turmeric, was also found to improve memory in healthy animals.

"We undertook a series of experiments to assay the drugs in collaboration with researchers at Cedars-Sinai and UCLA, who are leaders in the fields of stroke and TBI, respectively, and appreciate the potential for therapeutics based on natural products and their derivatives," said Schubert.

Meanwhile, researchers from Northwestern University claim to have found the molecular cause of brain injury post-traumatic stress disorder and a way to stop it developing.
