Almost 40 per cent of skiers will choose not to wear a helmet this season, risking traumatic brain injury, according to new figures.
A survey by EssentialTravel.co.uk revealed this worrying statistic, despite the fact that 75 per cent of those polled admitted to experiencing an accident on the slopes.
In addition, only 25 per cent of customers who had previously suffered serious injuries while skiing or snowboarding were wearing a helmet when the incident occurred.
Worried by these findings, the travel company has teamed up with brain injury association Headway and mountain sports retailer Ellis Brigham to launch a Use Your Head ski safety campaign.
Peter McCabe, chief executive of Headway, said: "There is a general misconception that only a major impact will lead to death or disability from a head injury. However, the truth of the matter is that even minor bangs to the head can have serious consequences."
Meanwhile, researchers from the John Hopkins Children's Center found that the level of a protein can predict brain injury and death in children on an extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation life support system.
