Retro computer game Tetris could help Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) sufferers recover, according to new research.
Researchers found that those who played Tetris following a traumatic event to simulate the brain injury suffered fewer flashbacks than participants who played word quiz game Pub Quiz Machine.
The study, conducted by researchers at Oxford University and published in journal PLoS ONE, showed volunteers a film containing traumatic images and then asked them to play either Tetris or the Pub Quiz Machine game.
Emily Holmes, a research clinical psychologist involved in the trial, said that Tetris must be played within a six-hour window after viewing the film to be effective.
"Whilst playing Tetris can reduce flashback-type memories without wiping out the ability to make sense of the event, we have shown that not all computer games have this beneficial effect - some may even have a detrimental effect on how people deal with traumatic memories," she added.
Meanwhile, researchers from McMaster University in Ontario have found that Tinnitus is caused by neurons firing in the brain rather than a defect in the ears themselves.
