Sports concussion should be 'taken more seriously'

Any athlete who is suspected to have a brain injury should be removed from play, says the American Academy of Neurology (AAN).

The recommendation states that if there is a possibility of an individual having a concussion during a sports game, they should be removed from the game and evaluated by a neurological professional.

A total of five recommendations were approved by the AAN regarding sports concussions after the media focused on the issue following a series of sporting head injuries.

In a statement, the AAN said that it was important for it to take a stance on the subject given state legislative activity regarding the matter.

"As many neurologists work directly with patients who have been diagnosed and treated for concussions that occurred while participating in sports, policymakers, the media and athletic programs look to the Academy for its perspective," the statement said.

This comes after the safety of American football was questioned when Rutgers defensive tackle, Eric LeGrand, suffered a traumatic spinal injury during a game.
