An ex-plumber who was paralysed in a traffic accident was left with brain injury after a nurse accidentally switched off his life support machine.
Jamie Merrett was paralysed from the neck down and required a ventilator to breathe after being involved in a car crash in 2002.
Mr Merrett, 37, who could communicate and work a wheelchair, was left brain damaged when a nurse, who has now been suspended, accidentally switched off his life support machine.
The patient was without oxygen for 21 minutes while agency nurse Violeta Aylward struggled to rectify the mistake.
The entire situation was caught on film as Mr Merrett had installed a camera in his room after worrying that a mistake would be made with his care.
His sister Karren Reynolds told The Telegraph: "His brain injury means he is unable to speak properly so he has lost that little bit of independence.
"He requires round the clock care. His life has essentially been ruined."
