Researchers have discovered that drinking coffee and tea regularly could protect individuals from a type of brain cancer.
Consuming just half a cup per day could lower the chance of cancer in the brain by up to 34 per cent, reports The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The study, by Brown University's department of community health, found that coffee and tea may shield against brain cancer in the form of glioma, which is a cancer of the nervous system that begins in the brain or spinal cord.
Lead researcher Dominique S Michaud called the findings "surprising", according to HealthDay News.
"The mechanism by which coffee is protective is completely unknown. While the caffeine itself might be important, some of the other common components of coffee or tea might also be relevant, such as natural antioxidants," she said.
Drinking several cups of the hot beverages may also protect against heart disease, according to a recent study at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, University Medical Center Utrecht, in the Netherlands.
