Mistakes were made by police when dealing with a man who had sustained a brain injury, an inquiry has found.
South Yorkshire Police have been criticised for treating a man suffering a brain injury as a drunk, an Independent Police Complaints Commission (Ipcc) investigation has concluded.
Twenty-two-year-old Dean Hutton was attacked with a scaffolding pole in an incident in Rotheram last year that has since resulted in two men being imprisoned for grevious bodily harm.
Despite paramedic advice to take Mr Hutton to hospital, he refused and was instead taken into custody for failing to attend court in relation to a separate case.
After 11 hours, his condition deteriorated and he was taken hospital. The investigation found that police failed to record his head injury and instead treated Mr Hutton as drunk.
Mr Hutton has "significant brain damage" and will require ongoing care.
Helium.com recently noted that traumatic brain injury symptoms can persist long after the initial incident.
