Hovis firm fined for traumatic brain injury

A firm has been fined after a worker suffered a traumatic brain injury and spinal injury while at work.

Premier Foods, which makes Hovis and Mr Kipling products, was fined £14,000 following a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation into an incident in which a maintenance engineer's skull was crushed by a metal pillar.

Thomas Williams suffered a severe traumatic brain injury that left him in hospital for six months and now, two years later, leaves him with trouble speaking.

In addition, Mr Williams has difficulty moving due to a spinal injury sustained in the same incident.

HSE inspector Phil Redman said there is no excuse for Premier Foods.

"A man's life has been turned upside down because basic health and safety procedures weren't followed.

"Mr Williams has been permanently disabled from his injuries and will never be able to return to work," he added.

The news comes after JBB Homes Ltd of St Petersgate, Stockport, and its director were fined a total of £30,000 after a worker fell 30 feet from scaffolding.
