Brain injury charity warns of London cycle scheme risk

A leading brain injury charity has warned that a new bicycle scheme in central London could be putting lives at risk.

Headway believes that enough has been done to ensure safety for users of the new London Cycle Hire scheme.

The charity's chief executive Peter McCabe said that of particular concern is the lack of advice on helmet use for cyclists.

He points out that a picture of Boris Johnson on the scheme's website shows the London mayor on a bicycle without a helmet.

Mr McCabe said that while it is good to encourage cycling, he fears that the lack of advice on wearing a helmet could lead to brain injuries and life-long disability.

"Helmets provide vital protection to all cyclists, with some cyclists more vulnerable than others," he addded.

His comments come after doctors treating rower James Cracknell for a traumatic brain injury said that his cycle helmet undoubtedly saved his life.
