Special glasses 'may help traumatic brain injury patients'

Traumatic brain injury sufferers may benefit from new prismatic lenses, scientists have said.

Sufferers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been found to suffer from visual image misalignment, or vertical heterophoria, which puts eye muscles under additional strain to correct sight.

The new glasses lenses reduce some of the symptoms caused by this extra effort on the part of the eyes, such as dizziness, anxiety, headaches and neck pain.

Scientists found that the use of the prismatic lenses reduced symptoms by 71.8 per cent after just three-and-a-half months.

Dr Mark S Rosner, clinical instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at The University of Michigan Medical School, said: "Vision was known to be affected by TBI, but now it appears that the vision abnormalities caused by the TBI are causing the other post-concussive symptoms."

The news comes after research published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology revealed a heightened risk of epilepsy in soldiers who had suffered some form of brain injury.
