James Cracknell brain injury 'minimised by cycle helmet'

James Cracknell's wife has spoken for the first time about the brain injury he suffered following his horrific traffic accident in the US.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, TV presenter Beverley Turner said that it was the cycle helmet he was wearing that saved his life. The helmet was "shorn in two" by the accident.

She added that doctors are amazed he did not suffer a spinal injury as well.

"I was told that although he fractured his skull at the back, the brain injury is at the front, where his brain was catapulted forward as his helmet hit the road at high speed," Ms Turner explained.

It seems Olympic gold medal-winning rower Cracknell had just bought a brand new helmet that contributed to limiting the impact of the crash.

He suffered the accident while in the US on a film tour for the Discovery Channel.

The incident occurred on the outskirts of the town of Winslow in Arizona.
