The risk of brain injury resulting from repeated concussions has been acknowledged by the US National Football League (NFL) with a new poster campaign.
The document, which will be required to be hung in every team's dressing room, warns players of the threat the sport poses.
In one of the first clear signs that the sport is taking the issue of traumatic brain injury (TBI) seriously, the poster warns that TBI "may lead to problems with memory and communication, personality changes, as well as depression and the early onset of dementia".
"Concussions and conditions resulting from repeated brain injury can change your life and your family's life forever," it reads.
The new approach is a marked step forward from a pamphlet issued to players just three years ago that claimed permanent brain injury problems were unlikely.
Recently, NFL star Chris Henry was found to have chronic underlying brain injuries when he died at the age of 26.
