One of the toughest things about brain injury is that it can make someone's personality almost unrecognisable to their family and friends, one brain injury sufferer has claimed.
Dennis Watson told the Whitecourt Star that most people who suffer serious brain injuries endure as much hardship emotionally as they do physically.
"We're not the people they married and that is a hard thing for a lot of people," he explained.
"Most people who have extensive brain injuries lose their partners. It's too hard on them, you're not the person they married."
He also believes that people have a total misunderstanding of what brain injury is as they do not appreciate that things like whiplash are forms of brain injury.
His comments come after Daniel Coe, who lost his wife in the accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury, spoke recently of how he has coped living with the condition.
He said that after the accident he fell into a deep depression but has since learned to appreciate things and be more positive.
