A man who suffered a brain injury that left him unresponsive in coma was about to have his life support machine switched off when doctors realised something remarkable.
As Richard Rudd was faced with death he managed to blink his eyes to indicate he wanted to carry on living.
He had suffered a serious spinal cord injury and brain injury after a motorbike accident left him completely paralysed and in a coma.
His story was told in the BBC documentary Between Life and Death.
Since his accident last year, Mr Rudd has recovered some of his senses. He is able to think, hear and feel, though still cannot speak or move.
He was being treated one Britain's leading brain injury centres, Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, when the film crew captured the moment.
A recent survey of patients at the hospital found that 96 per cent said the care they received met or exceeded their expectations.
