Shorter hospital stays for acquired brain injury patients

Patients suffering from one of the main causes of acquired brain injury - brain tumours - could spend less time in hospital recovering from surgery by staying awake during part of their operation, a new study has suggested.

A team from leading medical research institutions in Ohio in the US carried out the study on 39 patients suffering from glioma, a type of brain tumour.

Published in the Journal of Neurosurgery, the study found that those who underwent the operation while remaining conscious spent less time in hospital.

"Our data suggest that patients who received conscious sedation had shorter hospital stays than those receiving general anaesthesia and that this reduced the cost of treatment," study leader Dr E Antonio Chiocca said.

Brain injury may be caused by either of the two types of brain tumour- benign and malignant.

In malignant cases the tumour spreads through healthy tissue in the brain causing injury, while benign tumours may also affect the functioning of the brain by its growth putting pressure on the rest of the brain.
