Cranial bone replacement advance for brain injury sufferers

A new technological advance could make a difference to traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients.

Degradable implants that allow the cranium to heal itself following a skull fracture have been developed by German scientists.

Resobone implants emerged from a project commissioned by Germany's federal ministry for education and research as offering patients a much improved healing process compared to the commonly used titanium implants.

Designed by Karl Leibinger Medizintechnik company, the implants allow the skull to close the fissure and slowly disappear.

"Its precision fit and perfect porous structure, combined with the new biomaterial, promise a total bone reconstruction that was hitherto impossible to achieve," commented Dr Ralf Smeets of the University Medical Centre of Aachen.

The current technology can close a fracture of up 25 sq cm in size.

Skull fractures caused by head traumas can lead to TBIs, according to the brain injury charity Headway.
