Participants in the forthcoming Winter Olympics may be putting themselves at greater risk of serious brain injuries than ever before, it is believed.
Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Ian Chadband has raised the question of whether this could be the most dangerous instalment of the Olympics in history, as competitors push themselves ever harder to win a medal.
The chief sports correspondent stated that "a catalogue of accidents and serious injuries" has been a reminder of what can happen when participants "push the boundaries of speed and complexity in their events to ever more hazardous levels".
He referred to American half-pipe snowboarder Kevin Pearce, who is "on the long road to recovery" after suffering a brain injury during training, and he also cited the example of French ski cross competitor Florent Astier, who needed emergency surgery after suffering a severe spinal cord injury and paralysis.
The Winter Olympics 2010 takes place in Vancouver, Canada, between February 12th and 28th.
